Day 8

Day 8, 2 1/2 more hours of work done. We were able to place the fillets in the bottom-to-bottom and bottom-to-side panels in the cockpit section. We also put fillets around the bulkheads on the cockpit side. Once we did that, we put in the fiber glass tape and coated it in epoxy. The final task of the night was to put a layer of fiber glass cloth entire inside cockpit section. Then we had to coat it in epoxy. One thing we want to do different next time is to trim the rough edge off of the fiberglass tape so it lays down smoother. Dad posted a question (about the fiber glass tape issue) on the CLC Builders Forum, check out this link to see what some fellow builders suggested CLC Builders Forum

Day 7

Day 7, 2 1/2 more hours of work done. We were able to place the fillets in the bottom-to-bottom and bottom-to-side panels in the bow and the stern sections. We also put fillets around the bulkheads on the bow and stern sides. Once we did that, we put in the fiber glass tape and coated it in epoxy. The final task of the night was to put a layer of epoxy in the entire inside of the bow and stern sections. One note... epoxy is sticky. When you get it in the crease of your elbow and your sweatshirt sleeve is rolled up, it hurts like no other when you have to take the sweatshirt off.

Day 6

Day 6, 3 more hours of work done. We stitched the final 1/4 of the joints remaining on the top and bottom panel seam. We also got the kayak up on for sticks so we could perform the winding check. The boat is true. No twists, no turns, no bubbles in the hull. With that done we moved on to dry fitting the bulkheads. Dad was able to trim the bulkheads with a block plane so they fit just right.

Day 5

Here we are on Day 5. We stitched 3/4 of the side panel to the bottom panel in 3 hours. We made a mistake that could actually help us. We are stitching the panels together every 2 inches, we should have done them every 4. But by doing it every 2 we have less chance of forming a bubble in the hull. It just means we use more wire and wear our fingers a littler more from twisting and threading all of the wires.

Day 4

Only Day 4 and we got the pile of parts looking like a boat! Today we worked for a little over 3 hours. The sheer clamps were dry so we sanded the scarf joints on the bottom and side panels. We also drilled the holes in bottom and side panels for stitching. Once that was done we were able to stitch the bow and stern of the side panels and the keel line on the bottom panel. With that done we could open up the panels and it took the form of a boat! Woo-hoo! We did have our first shop accident... Dad cut his finger a little but was patched up with a sponge bob band-aid.

Day 3

On Day 3 we worked a total of 2 hrs and 15 min. We were able to unclamp the scarf joints and clean them up, glue the sheer clamps to the side panels, and marked the stich holes on the bottom panel. We also found out that we can reuse the plastic epoxy cups and wooden sticks by pulling out the dried unused epoxy once it hardens and trimming the stick a little shorter for a second use.
